Abstract:

This paper presents the conceptual, structural, and thematic foundations of Luminescence, a collection of interconnected character studies set across a single unnamed metropolis during the span of one calendar year. The collection resists the conventional architecture of the short-story cycle by refusing to privilege any single character as protagonist: instead, each study illuminates a figure whose light spills into the next, whose existence reshapes the negative space around the others. Drawing on the traditions of the urban pastoral, the mosaic novel, and the lyric essay, Luminescence argues that the city is not a backdrop against which human lives unfold but a living system of mutual luminescence — each person a source, each street corner a reflective surface, each act of attention a form of love. This paper examines the collection's governing metaphor, its cast of twelve central figures, its structural logic, its engagement with questions of race, class, gender, and immigrant experience in the contemporary city, its narrative techniques, and its literary lineage. The paper concludes by situating the collection within the broader tradition of urban fiction as a literature of ethical witness, proposing that the act of seeing another person fully — in the way that the best fiction compels its reader to see — is itself a political act
