Abstract:

This paper presents a bibliometric study of global research on artificial intelligence (AI), generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), and higher education, interpreted in the context of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Bibliographic data were retrieved from the Lens.org database, and 830 publications published between 2020 and 2025 were analyzed. The study also examines yearly growth of publications, productive authors, source countries, highly cited publications, frequently occurring keywords, and emerging research themes. The results indicate an increase in the publishing output, especially in 2024 and 2025. Keyword analysis was based on the 25 records in the supplied CSV that contained non-empty keyword fields. Highly cited publications primarily address students’ perceptions and acceptance of generative AI, technology adoption, academic integrity, and educational applications The paper discusses the development of this area of research and its significance for higher education and information services within the context of National Education Policy 2020.

The analysis focuses on five bibliometric dimensions: annual publication growth, author productivity, source-country contribution, citation impact, and keyword frequency and emerging themes.
