Abstract:

Rural markets act as vital links among rural producers and consumers, and intermediaries for propagating rural development. India, with a majority of its population residing in rural areas, cannot build balanced socio-economic growth without developing efficient and inclusive rural markets. They facilitate the distribution of goods and services and thereby improve market access for farmers and artisans, generating employment opportunities and fostering rural entrepreneurship.

The effectiveness of rural markets is closely associated with the availability of adequate infrastructure and institutional support. Improvement in rural roads, transportation, storage facilities, and digital connectivity has significantly increased market accessibility and efficiency. Initiatives by the government to improve rural infrastructure, in turn, promote market integration through the PMGSY, Digital India, and the Electronic National Agriculture Market (e-NAM). These have improved price discovery and reduced information asymmetry in rural areas. Institutional mechanisms such as self-help groups, cooperatives, and farmer-producer organisations further facilitated collective marketing and enhanced the bargaining power of rural producers.

In spite of these developments, the rural markets still suffer from a number of constraints, including a lack of proper infrastructure in the countryside, a lack of access to marketing information, the digital divide, intermediaries' dominance, and the weak financial position of small producers. These challenges will have to be overcome to maximise the potential contribution of rural markets toward the sustainable development of rural areas.

The study relies on secondary data from government reports, national surveys, and published research studies that bring out the contribution of rural markets to rural development, examine issues that continue to persist, and measures required measures for strengthening rural market systems towards inclusive and sustainable growth.
