Abstract

Freshwater reservoirs are important ecological systems supporting rich fish biodiversity and providing livelihoods through fisheries. The present study investigates the fish biodiversity and ecological status of Majalgaon Reservoir, constructed on the Sindphana River in Beed district of Maharashtra. Seasonal sampling was carried out to document ichthyofaunal diversity and to assess ecological health using diversity indices and selected physico-chemical parameters. A total of 24 fish species belonging to 7 orders and 12 families were recorded, with Cyprinidae being the dominant family. Diversity indices indicate moderate to high species diversity, suggesting that the reservoir supports a relatively stable aquatic ecosystem. The study highlights the ecological importance of Majalgaon Reservoir and emphasizes the need for sustainable fisheries management and conservation measures.
