Abstract
Online freelancing allows individuals from all over the world to work remotely. A freelancer is a self-employed individual who offers services to several clients simultaneously. This study examines freelancers' prospects and obstacles in driving Sustainable Development, focusing on economic, social, and environmental aspects. Engaging in freelance work offers a way to generate extra income without encountering the social prejudices often found in conventional workplace settings, particularly in developing regions, where career opportunities may be limited. This underscores the importance of equitable work environments, stable income, and ethical considerations in promoting an inclusive and sustainable freelance economy that benefits workers and society. Freelancers often use digital platforms and tools that contribute to lower carbon emissions and a more environmentally sustainable economy. It empowers individuals by providing income-generating opportunities, regardless of geographical location, thereby reducing poverty and promoting equitable economic participation. Additionally, it supports societal upliftment by fostering work-life balance and challenging gender inequality. Additionally, freelancing encourages a more adaptive workforce that can quickly respond to market needs, driving innovation in sustainable practices. The decentralised nature of freelance work supports diverse, global collaborations, fosters knowledge transfer, and harnesses sustainable solutions. Despite this, issues related to labour rights, public safety, and stable income continue to exist. This study employs secondary data on freelancers from Upwork and ASSOCHAM. By assessing freelancer data within the understanding of sustainable development and to enhance their contribution to sustainable development, it is essential to address these challenges by calling on policymakers and stakeholders to create a framework that supports the freelance economy while ensuring it aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development.
