Abstract

Indian English literature has become an important and influential part of modern world literature. Although English came to India through British colonial rule, Indian writers gradually transformed it into a powerful medium for expressing Indian experiences, culture, history, identity, and social realities. Indian English writers did not simply imitate British literary traditions. Instead, they adapted the English language to express Indian thoughts, emotions, customs, landscapes, and social problems.

Writers such as Mulk Raj Anand, R. K. Narayan, Raja Rao, Anita Desai, Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Seth, Kiran Desai, Aravind Adiga, and Jhumpa Lahiri have made significant contributions to modern literature. Their works deal with themes such as colonialism, caste, poverty, gender, identity, migration, tradition, modernity, globalization, and environmental concerns.

This article examines the role of Indian English writers in modern literature and highlights their contribution to the development of a distinct literary tradition. It also discusses how these writers have connected Indian experiences with global readers. Indian English literature has become an important bridge between local culture and international literature. Through their creative use of language and their exploration of social and human issues, Indian English writers have established a unique and respected place in modern literature.
