Abstract

This study evaluates the financial performance of the State Bank of India (SBI) following significant mergers in the Indian banking sector, focusing on key financial metrics and market positioning. Given the increasing trend of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the banking industry, understanding their impact on a major institution like SBI is crucial for stakeholders, including regulators, policymakers, and investors. The research employs a quantitative approach, analysing financial data before and after the major mergers involving SBI, including its merger with five associate banks in 2017. Key performance indicators such as Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Net Interest Margin (NIM), Cost-to-Income Ratio, and Non-Performing Assets (NPAs), Credit-Deposit Ratio, Operating Profit Margin, Net Profit Margin, Loan-to-Asset Ratio, Earnings Per Share, Price-to-Earnings Ratio, Book Value per Share, Liquidity Coverage Ratio, etc., are examined to assess the changes in operational efficiency, profitability, and asset quality. The findings reveal that the mergers have significantly influenced SBI's financial performance, resulting in improved profitability ratios and enhanced market positioning. However, challenges related to managing NPAs and integrating diverse operational cultures were also identified. The study concludes with strategic recommendations for SBI and other banking institutions to optimize their M&A strategies, highlighting the importance of post-merger integration and aligning operational practices to sustain financial performance.

This research contributes to the existing literature on banking M&As in India and offers insights into the critical factors influencing the success of consolidation efforts in enhancing financial performance and shareholder value. By focusing on SBI, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the financial dynamics of large public sector banks in a rapidly evolving banking landscape.
